Maintenance CASE Studies Great Ormond Street Hospital We have been working alongside Great Ormond Street Hospital since 2019 carrying out the quarterly PPMs in line with HTM and assisting the Estates team with improving the compliance of the existing medical gas infrastructure. In August 2024 D&L completed a turnkey project for GOSH replacing 2 of their main air plants, vacuum plant and reconfiguring the existing infrastructure allowing them to better utilise site provisions and provide a safer medical gas system. East and North Herts NHS – Lister Hospital D&L have with worked with East and North Herts NHS Trust across all of their sites within Hertfordshire undertaking the maintenance, upgrading of existing infrastructure and installation works. D&L have been working alongside Equans since 2018 providing maintenance and installation services on multiple of there PFI hospital sites. We have been privaliged to Install a new Orthopedic and recovery at Central Middlesex hospital, Stroke unit in West Middlesex hospital and Alarm replacements in Barnet Hospital. Vinci Facilities have two hospitals within London that they provide maintenance services to the NHS Trusts, QEH in Woolwich and Princess Royal in Orpington. D&L work with both sites assisting them with assuring compliance with HTM Maintenance requirements and design of installation works. Chase Farm In 2018 D&L handed over the medical gas installation of Chase Farm Royal Free Hospital, working alongside Vinci IHP on the £200million redevelopment, D&L took the project from initial design through installation to commissioning and handover. Chase Farm Hospital is a centre for planned surgery for patients across north and central London, in particular orthopaedics, ear, nose, and throat maxillofacial, general and gynaecological procedures including 8 state of the art operating theatres. Petnet - Dunstable D&L were approached by Henry Brothers in 2022 to initially assist with the design of a high purity industrial gas installation to supply a cyclotron, working alongside specialist from America, Belgium and France we designed a suitable system that would not only meet the requirements of the specialist kit but the British regulations required. Upon completion of the design D&L were awarded the installation contract, installing Medical air compressors, Stainless Steel pipework and high purity manifolds/ regulator for gases such as Helium, Argon and hydrogen. Nightingale London (Excel) In response to rising contraction and fatality rates of Covid-19 along with the British army D&L medical were drafted in to assist planning and building of a one-of-a-kind field Hospital. On Saturday 21st March 2020 Les Hood visited a potential location for London’s Covid -19 specialist field hospital – The Excel Centre London and on Sunday 22nd March 2020 Plans for a 3600 bed Itu hospital were drafted and signed off with immediate effect. The final plans for Nightingale was split into 8 phases comprising of between 378-544 ITU beds across two hospital wards, with a deadline of 9 days from work commencing to being patient ready. With a team of 10 pipefitters we installed over 20Km of degreased medical grade copper pipework, 4 triplex air plants, 35Km of flexible medical gas hose, 10,800 terminal units and 800 line valve assemblies.

It all began when two medical gas service engineers recognised the need for a more flexible, efficient, and cost-effective solution to maintenance of Medical Gas Pipeline Systems (MGPS) that were present in general hospitals serving the NHS. In February 1994 Denis Read & Les Hood decided to form a partnership to deliver their goals of bespoke engineering services to NHS & private hospitals. Starting with a handful of hospitals, who embraced the fresh approach which the company had to offer, we gradually increased our customer base offering tailored medical gas equipment maintenance and servicing which today remains our main core passion. Although starting out initially as a maintenance provider, it soon became apparent that our maintenance processes required a level of installation input. We were increasingly asked by our clients to carry out installation works ranging from plant and manifold replacements to ward and infrastructure upgrades. The team embraced this opportunity and structured a new installation department. The team, being focused on quality and compliance, soon realised an opportunity to invest and expand its portfolio into professional services with consultancy, design, and authorised persons services. Understanding from the outset that as a young company, we would have to demonstrate a high level of Quality Assurance. We gained accreditation to BS5750, as the quality assurance standard was known then. As quality assurance requirements changed, so did D&L Medical’s. Currently we are registered with BSI to both ISO9001 for general quality assurance and ISO13485 for medical device compliance purposes. Today we have established ourselves as a major contractor in the medical/industrial gases field but ultimately, we are still focused on our main aim of providing excellent maintenance and installation services across NHS & Private healthcare establishments, laboratories, and universities. LES HOOD MANAGING DIRECTOR MGPS AP & CP At the forefront of D&L is our Managing Director, Les Hood. With too many years of experience to count, Les began his career as an engineer at Penlon before founding D&L Medical in February 1994 alongside Dennis Read. As a pivotal figure within the medical gas community, Les has helped shape the industry into what it is today, leading landmark projects such as the O₂ Nightingale design. PAUL SULLIVAN OPERATIONS MANAGER MGPS AP & CP Paul joined D&L in January 2021 after many years working within the NHS, where he served as an Estates Maintenance Manager and Technical Services Manager. His experience provides invaluable insight into NHS estates operations and working practices, enabling D&L to refine our own processes to better support the healthcare sector in achieving compliance. Since joining, Paul has implemented the Protean system, driving D&L’s digital transformation and continuing to push the business towards becoming the industry’s number‑one choice for medical gas works. RICHARD CLUBB MAINTENANCE MANAGER MGPS AP & CP Richard joined D&L in 2016 and brings over 16 years of experience in the medical gas industry. ANDREW BELL Compliance Manager Andrew (Drew) joined D&L in February 2024 following a long career in the NHS, most recently serving as Director of Estates at Great Ormond Street Hospital. KAREN CLARK OFFICE MANAGER Karen has been part of D&L since its early days. The daughter of co‑founder Dennis Read, she initially joined the team on a temporary basis in 1995 and has remained a vital presence ever since.
